Previous studies have found changes in the vascular properties, blood volume and heart rate of women during pregnancy. However, until now, the impact of pregnancy on cardiovascular health has been discussed.

A total of 10 studies involved about 3 million women worldwide. In which more than 150,000 people were diagnosed with cardiovascular disease or stroke within 6-52 years later. Researchers found that births were associated with a 14% higher risk of heart disease and stroke. They also found an association between the number of pregnancies and the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Women have a 4% higher incidence of cardiovascular disease every birth, regardless of weight, a history of diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking or income levels. According to calculations, each childbirth increases the risk of coronary heart disease by 5% and stroke by 3%.

Lead researcher Wang Dongming said pregnancy could cause inflammation in the body and build up fatty tissue around the abdomen, blood, and arteries. Even these changes can have long-term effects on the cardiovascular system, leading to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

However, Wang said, women, can completely prevent cardiovascular diseases themselves. He advised women to avoid smoking or sit in a smoke-free environment, exercise more, have a healthy diet and keep weight under control.

The study is just initial calculations about the effect of childbirth on a woman’s body. More in-depth studies will be needed to assess the impact of childbirth on women’s health best.

In July 2018, a group of researchers at Northwestern University, USA, pointed out that childbirth causes aging for women up to 2 years faster than those who have not yet given birth.

The research by Chinese scientists has been published in the recent European Heart Association magazine.
